Sneaker Culture Today

A lot of parents, and now a growing number of Millennials are a bit baffled by the sudden demand in sneaker world. Getting over the first question of why kids are so in love with sneakers now is the biggest hurdle, but once you get over that the game gets deep.

dxc1When I was a teenager, Michael Jordan was working on his comeback from baseball. The Jordan X was the introduction to his return, but it was the upswing of the sneaker culture. Michael Jordan was such a dynamic player, that kids and even adults believed that their game elevated when wearing his signature shoes. It wasn’t until Spike Lee aka “Mars Blackmon” came into play that the sneaker culture had it’s first look at a sneakerhead. Mars Blackmon is the spirit of the sneaker culture. The voice of the young men who wore the shoes because it gave them a particular feeling, Mars spoke that language.

We’re a long way away from those days. But I remember when the Jordan “Concord” XI was introduced. It was like seeing the iPhone for the first time for Jordan fans. The patent leather was the touchscreen, the clear soles was the shape, and the small details were the apps. As if the design by Tinker Hatfield wasn’t enough, MJ went to go on and win his fourth title while winning 72 games in the process. His greatest season came in the Jordan XI’s. So how did we get to this? htwn summit1

The H-Town Sneaker Summit is a sneaker expo that goes on twice a year where thousands of shoe lovers come to buy, sell and trade their precious kicks. It’s a great way for small clothing lines to get their name out, and a cool way to exchange your kicks for some more heat. Expos like this one and the DunkXchange are where young sneakerheads go to learn the shoe stock exchange. You come equipped with the shoes you want to sell, in the hopes you can buy, sell, or trade your way up to the kicks you’ve been wanting. htwn summit

The sneaker game goes up and down just the stock exchange. Similar to wine or antique jewelry , the older editions are considered the most rare and exclusive. It’s one thing to have a sneaker, but if you have the original version in wearable condition it’s like owning a rare Merlot. Being aware of a shoe’s market value will allow you to sell when it’s at it’s highest point, in the hopes you don’t get stuck with it as the value diminishes over time. Because of this, reselling is at an all-time high. Some sneakers can net a profit of up to $1,000 depending on the condition and exclusivity of the shoe. The Nike Air Yeezy 2 was the catalyst of the resell movement. With the shoe only being released at a handful of stores in limited numbers, the demand was so high that the price went along with it. Right now a brand new pair can range anywhere from $3,000-8,000. And people still buy them.

The resell world is a dirty one. The demand and promise of profit margins are driving kids to wait outside in lines through the night for the chance to purchase the new hype. Due to violence, stores like Champs and Footlocker are doing raffles to make purchasing the shoes easier for both parties. Online is even harder, as computer savvy teens are using bots to purchase multiple pairs at a time to capitalize on the high demand. It teaches these young men and women how to be entrepreneurs, but at what costs? With the average high demand sneaker pricing out at around $150 a pair, it’s hard to keep up with two to three releases per month.

The game has changed, but there’s a lot of money to be made. It’s easy to get all these sneakers when you don’t pay rent, but for us 30+ year old adults with legitimate bills we can’t keep up. We remember the feeling we got when Jordan released those shoes. We didn’t want to sell them, because we knew what it meant to have them. Not to say the game is bad now, but it’s just…different.

Are There “LeBron Rules”?

LeBron James is a 6 foot 8 inch tall, 250 pound, 40 inch vertical leaping point guard. Not to mention from end to end he might be one of the faster players in the entire NBA. But something has become apparent since winning his first trophy, and it looks like it’s only beginning.

When LeBron gets going full speed, there are only two options for about 99% of human beings in the world. First option: Let him get to the rack, finish with some monstrous dunk, and keep your body in tact. Second option: Try to grab him before he takes off in the hopes that it won’t result in an “And 1” like many of his plays in the paint do. Miami Heat v Brooklyn NetsOption one is the smart option, but for those brave men who want to take on the challenge of the second option how are they supposed to stop him? It’s become clear that the normal amount of force needed to stop a man doesn’t apply to Mr. James. As a result, we’ve seen the number of hard fouls on Lebron increase. But can you blame them?

Obviously no one wants to hurt anyone on the floor…kind of. With how hard defenders need to hit LeBron in order for him to stop, you would think that every intentional foul was malicious. I don’t think that LeBron should be forced to water down his game, because it’s obvious his size and athleticism give me an advantage. But, what else are defenders supposed to do?

I can’t help but think about when The GOAT would go up against the Pistons and get demolished on the floor. The thought was if you rough up Michael, you can get into his head a little bit. Most players were intimidated by Jordan, but the Pistons wanted to send a clear message that he’s just a man. mjfoulThe NBA back then didn’t have the same fouling system that it does now, which probably would have increased Jordan’s career PPG average a point or so due to free throws and extra possessions. A hard foul was a hard foul, and all the referee needed to worry about was it turning into a fight.

These days players don’t foul as hard, but they do foul as much. The determination system on how to properly call these fouls has changed the game. Yet, LeBron is still getting put in a headlock on the way to the hoop.

“Maybe I’ve got to protect myself a little more too,” James said when asked if a hard foul from the Cavs after a hard foul on him might curb opponents’ behavior.

We’ll see if players continue to go after LeBron in the hopes to rattle the cage a little bit, but expect it to lead to fines, extra possessions for the Cavs, and free throws. Back when Jordan was around the fouls didn’t cost that much, that’s why they were so frequent. These days fouls are used appropriately because the cost is so high. So what are the rules?

Chris Paul Fined $25K: Are you serious?

The NBA has fined Chris Paul $25,000 for comments he made about referee Lauren Holtkamp in reference to a technical foul he received in the game. Because Holtkamp is obviously a woman, a lot of people have suggested that Chris Paul’s comments towards her may be a little sexist. Paul assures that it’s not.

“It was about a bad call,” Paul said. Several times actually.

According to Paul the technical foul came after he tried to inbounds the ball early after a made basket. This is something a lot of teams do, especially ones like the Clippers who do well in an uptempo style of play. Some refs don’t mind you doing it, as it speeds up the game and makes for a more exciting product. Holtkamp I guess isn’t a fan of it.

“The tech that I get right there was ridiculous. I don’t care what nobody says, I don’t care what she says; that’s terrible. There’s no way that can be a tech. We try to get the ball out fast every time down the court, and when we did that, she said, ‘Uh-uh.’ I said, ‘Why, uh-uh?’ And she gave me a tech.”

New Orleans Pelicans v Philadelphia 76ersBefore I get into what I think about the situation, let me make it clear that I don’t think Holtkamp is a bad referee. I actually think she’s pretty qualified considering she’s been a ref in FIBA, WNBA, and NBADL games for a number of years. She obviously isn’t afraid or star struck by making calls on the biggest stage. But, the other part of me knows that she’s a rookie ref for NBA games, and that she’s obviously a woman.

Now I’m not saying she’s sensitive, or emotional, or any of those things. I don’t know her personally, so I wouldn’t know. What I do think is that when a woman is put into a position like her, where she is asked to monitor and control grown men who are much larger and stronger than her, you might get a bitch. I know times have changed where women are looked at more equal than ever, but there definitely is still this mindset in place that when it comes to pro sports, men are the rulers. My guess is Holtkamp wanted to flex a little bit just to show she’s not to be disrespected. That’s probably what she was thinking, but her reaction would have been better suited for something a little bit more vulgar or offensive in my opinion.

In her defense, I don’t know Chris Paul. What I do know is that he might be one of the most competitive people in the NBA inside those lines. But he’s also the President of the NBA Players Association. I mean, this is the best guy out of all the guys in the NBA and we’re saying he might be sexist? Chris Paul with wife and kids at LAXConsidering Chris Paul has never had any off the court incidents, problems in college, or high school, I have trouble believing he’s sexist. When you see photos of Chris he’s usually with his wife and son. To the public, he looks like a really nice guy. Except on the court. That’s where he looks like he’s a jerk, but not just to women. Players, fans, referees, hell if the ball boy said something I bet Chris Paul would say something back. He’s competitive.

Overall I’m sure Lauren Holtkamp’s tone was, “I don’t care who you are, this is my game, we’re playing by my rules. #NoFlexZone.”

Chris Paul’s tone probably sounded like “I’m the President of the NBAPA, do you know who you’re talking to right now rookie?”

Then the technical foul. I don’t think this will hurt Chris Paul’s marketing ability at all, but luckily Adam Silver is the Commissioner otherwise David Stern probably would have gave a $35,000 fine.

Why Hate On Coach Cal?

Coach John Calipari is one of the move loved and hated coaches in America, and it’s easy to see why. Every year the Kentucky Wildcats don’t start over, they simply reload. Example, the 2012 National Championship team loaded with talents Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Marquis Teague for freshman and Terrence Jones lost all of them to the NBA draft. No sweat. Kentucky added Julius Randle, the Harrison Twins, Dakari Johson, James Young, and Marcus Lee. coach cal2

As fate would have it, last year’s Kentucky team lost a number of starters to the NBA, but what Calipari and his staff did this summer is something never seen in college basketball. Tyler Ulis, Devon Booker, Karl Anthony-Townes, and Trey Lyles all five star ranked players signed to go to Lexington. Not to mention the Harrison twins, Dakari Johnson, Willie Cauley-Stein, Marcus Lee, and Alex Poythress all decided to stay back.

Calipari could create his all galaxy with all the ranked stars on this year’s roster. It’s unfair, and some truly feel this way. What is it about Coach Cal and Kentucky that draws players there every single year? The answer is simple: N-B-A.

That’s part of what rubs people the wrong way about Cal, is that he uses his schools as farm houses for top star talents to come for a year, then bounce. University of Memphis got the same heat when a young freshman named Derrick Rose decided to turn up all the way to the National Championship game. But imagine that, knowing every year you possibly have to bring in an entire new starting five, because your top three guys decided to pursue their dreams. You feel bad asking them to come back, especially if you know their family needs the money. But how do you sell education when kids see dollar signs?

When you’re winning every season, it’s easy to land the top guys. Exclusive Nike gear and shoes, nationally televised games every week, Drake is showing up to your Midnight Madness, shooting airballs in layup lines. Who wouldn’t want to play there? But with great power comes great responsibility. Coach Cal is under a microscope at Kentucky, and best believe his every move that comes with recruiting is checked on. When you have the kind of talent to rotate a new five every ten minutes without losing any talent with your second group; you’re doing something right.

Right now Kentucky is ranked #1 in the country and the only undefeated team left in the country. A lot of people are saying they’ll go undefeated and win the National Championship. As Coach Cal always says, it’s not what you do in February that matters, it’s what you do in March. We’ll see how Kentucky handles the rest of the regular season before getting their likely 1 seed in the tournament.

And for those of you wondering about what’s going to happen next year, don’t trip. Kentucky again has the #1 ranked recruiting class, already getting letters of intent from three of the Top 50 recruits in the country. Rumor has it Kentucky may land another player in this year’s Top 10 ranking. Wouldn’t be surprised; that’s what Coach Cal does.

More recruits, more problems.
